WJWC Condemns Targeted Killing of Six Journalists in Gaza

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) has condemned in the strongest possible terms the Israeli occupation forces' deliberate targeting of a press tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on the evening of Sunday,

10 August 2024, which claimed the lives of six Palestinian journalists covering the unfolding events.

According to WJWC, those killed were Al Jazeera correspondents Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh; photojournalists Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa; and journalist Mohammed Al-Khalidi.

“These journalists were fulfilling their professional and humanitarian mission — documenting events in Gaza and conveying the truth to the world, minute by minute,” the organization stated. “Targeting them is not only a direct assault on press freedom, but a calculated attempt to extinguish the voice of truth.”

WJWC stressed that the attack constitutes a grave escalation and a criminal act in clear violation of international humanitarian law. The organization described it as a full-fledged war crime, intended to obscure evidence of other crimes and to intimidate the press into silence.

Holding Israeli occupation forces fully responsible, WJWC called on the international community — particularly institutions charged with defending press freedom — to denounce the killings and take immediate measures to protect journalists in Gaza. The organization urged the prosecution of those responsible, warning that continued impunity will only embolden further attacks on the media.

“Silencing journalists will not erase the reality on the ground,” WJWC emphasized. “The truth about what is happening in Gaza will not be hidden from the world.”

The organization also noted that, according to its monitoring, the number of journalists killed by Israeli forces since the start of the current military offensive on Gaza on 7 October 2023 has now risen to 238.
